Revision Hip Replacement

Revision or Re-do Hip replacement is required when primary hip replacement fails for whatever reason. It is more complicated and expensive as compared to primary THR.

Indications

Loosening of Hemi or Total hip replacement

Hip Prosthesis can become loose over a period of time due to various reasons. This can lead to pain and difficulty in walking. It can be treated by Revision THR.

Prosthesis Dislocation

Femoral head can come out of acetabulum and cause pain, shortening and inability to walk. This can be primarily treated by closed reduction. Recurrent dislocation required revision surgery.

Peri-Prosthetic fracture

Fracture around hip prosthesis can make the prosthesis loose. Revision surgery is required to fix the fracture and reconstruct the hip using long stem prosthesis.

Infection after Hip Replacement

Infection around hip prosthesis may require to take out the prosthesis, debride thoroughly and insert Antibiotic loaded cement spacer. This is followed by 4 to 6 weeks of IV antibiotics. Once infection is cured, second surgery is required to remove the spacer and put a new prosthesis. This is called Two stage revision surgery.
